Detoxification for Health & Wellness - The Missing Key

Detoxification is something our bodies do on a daily basis. It is the process of eliminating toxins through the five eliminatory channels:

Liver
Colon
Lungs
Kidneys
Lymph
Skin

In the world we live in today, with polluted water, air and food, our bodies regularly get overloaded with substances that do not support our body - toxins! Our bodies become overloaded and are over-burdened with eliminating toxins. So many undesirable substances stay our bodies.
Surrounding these substances with mucous and fat is one way our system tries to shield us from these invading substances. a good portion is stored in our fat deposits!
A detoxification program is a good way of assisting our body to eliminate and neutralize these harmful toxins.

Let us look at the 5 organs for detoxification:

Liver

The liver is the largest internal organ in the body and plays a crucial role in maintaining normal metabolism and detoxifying the body.

Colon

Disease begins in the colon. The colon is responsible for both carrying wastes out of the body and nourishing the body. Nutrients are absorbed in the colon. So if your body is storing toxins and excess mucous they will be stuck to the intestinal walls of the colon. Making it very hard for your body to absorb the required nutrients and eliminate the wastes traveling through the colon.

Lungs

Your lungs are responsible for helping your body get the required oxygen it needs by processing the air we breathe. The lungs are one of the first organs to intake toxins. A cold is usually a sign that your body is trying to rid itself of toxins and waste matter that has built up to the point of overwhelming your immune system.

Kidneys

The kidneys play an important role as a filter for the body as well. Water is vital to helping the kidneys do their job. The average person eliminates approximately 5 pints of water a day. Drinking adequate water is essential.

Lymph

The lymphatic system carries a clear fluid which contains excess proteins, wastes, and other elements. This fluid called lymph surrounds the cells of our body to bring them nourishment and carry wastes out of the body.
Unlike the blood, the lymph does not have the heart to pump it through the body. It must rely on the movement of the body and stimulation.

Skin

As mentioned earlier, the skin is the largest organ of the body.

Benefits of Detoxification

There are several benefits of detoxification:

  1. End your cravings for habit-forming substances such as sugar, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and drugs.

  2. Increase your energy by removing toxins that wear you down.
  3. Shrink your stomach to its normal size, making it easier to control the quantity of food eaten.
  4. Boost your mental clarity by flushing away chemicals, food additives and preservatives.
  5. Break your bad eating habits to achieve or maintain your desired weight.
  6. Lose weight. A detox program is the first step to safe and effective weight loss.
  7. Cleanse your digestive tract of accumulated waste and bacteria.
  8. Purify all your major organs allowing you to function at your best.
  9. Reduce cellulite, allergies, acne and obesity safely and naturally.

What is a good Detox program?

A Good Detoxification program should be designed to help the body cleanse itself of toxins, mucus, and waste materials in the intestinal tract and liver, kidneys, and blood, thus helping your body function better. This not only restores new energy to your vital organs, but to the entire body as well.

New Year - New You!

It’s New Year - so you decide its time for a New You!

Do you often feel tired and stressed out?

Has modern day city life encouraged you put on a few pounds?

Do you have trouble sleeping — even though you are exhausted?

You’re not alone. One of the most common complaints today is the feeling of fatigue and weight gain.
Our modern lifestyle, which includes pollution, high stress levels, poor diet, antibiotics, poor quality water, processed fast food, agricultural chemicals and inappropriate rest are just a few of the things that are responsible for a wide range of symptoms and illnesses that can contribute to you experiencing some of the following:

Overweight
Gas, bloating and indigestion
Diarrhoea and / or constipation
Bad breath and body odour
Chronic fatigue
IBS
Skin problems such as Acne, Eczema
High cholesterol levels
Food cravings
Frequent bouts of illness such as colds, flu

Dehydration decreases your ability to digest food properly.
This can lead to Gastric inflammation and if you combine this with stress then Leaky Gut Syndrome can occur. This leads to fatigue after eating your meals.

So what can you do about it?

Here are my tips to help you get you started:

1. Drink the right amount of good quality water for your bodyweight - minimum of 2 litres per day.

2. Pay off your sleep debt. Get to bed on time! We all need a minimum of 8 hours sleep every night to help promote recovery to our body’s muscular system and our hormonal system. Without this the body will not be able to regulate its metabolism correctly, which is vital for those seeking weight loss.

3. Eat right for your Metabolic Type. Eating the wrong ratios of Macronutrients (Fats, Carbohydrates and Protein) for your body type can cause weight gain, fatigue and a decrease in energy levels.

4. Eat only certified organic food - this will help remove toxins and harsh chemicals out of your system.

5. Restrict your alcohol content to less than 4 units per week. Alcohol has empty calories which the body can not use as fuel. It also elevates Insulin and Cortisol production. Both these are important hormones in the body, but if released in excess, they can cause weight gain. Alcohol also irritates the stomach lining, which can lead to digestive problems.

6. If you smoke - now is the chance to give up. Long term smoking damage apart from the risks of cancer and heart disease, have now also been shown to include skin damage. An example of this is the “crow’s feet” skin wrinkling that is so characteristic of people who have smoked for a long time. This is due to oxidative damage induced by the smoking.

7. Exercise right for your body, do some cardiovascular exercise such as walking for 30 minutes and introduce some strength training to help boost your metabolism. A good Personal Trainer can help you with this.

8. Practice energy boosting techniques such as Tai-Chi, Yoga and Qi Gong. These exercises help to cultivage “Chi” the natural energy source that is all around us. This energy often needs harvesting because we are always in “fast mode”.

For you to become truly healthy and get the results you desire, you will need to review and consider your current diet and lifestyle habits from a different viewpoint.

Act now to have a healthy active full life doing the things you want to do and to have the shape that you desire!

If weight gain, fatigue and stress are an issue for you then seek the help of a Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach. They can help you manage these symptoms using structured techniques such as proper eating, corrective exercise, stress management and lifestyle improvements.

Enjoy the New You!

Detox - New Year - New Body

You’ve eaten and drunk well over the Christmas and New Year period, but you now find your self sluggish and slow and not ready to get into the swing of things again.

Well one way of getting yourself up and going again is to start a detox programme. The whole idea is to remove the toxins from you body caused by substances such as alcohol, tobacco and food consumed during the festive period. A detox programme helps your body by cleaning out the toxins that you have absorbed by passing them from your skin, liver and kidneys, which act as cleansing filters. The whole idea of a detox diet is to strengthen up the organs that your body uses to carry out detoxification of the toxins on a normal day-to-day basis and release the toxins that have become stored up in your body.

You may find that the detox programme you decide to use could have a number of different elements to it i.e., diet, nutritional supplements and herbs, exercise and possibly a number of alternative treatments. You may even decide to purchase a detox course from any good pharmacy or health shop.

The best and probably the most cost effective way of being able to remove the toxins from your body is to start eating more fresh fruit and vegetables and also drinking plenty of water. Wherever possible the fruit and vegetables that you eat should have a good source of fibre and one such fruit is a banana. Also try and drink at least 2 litres of water each day. If you find that water is a little bland, then try and jazz it up a bit with some lemon juice or even flaxseed, both of which act as a fairly good laxative.

When preparing the fruit and vegetables that you are going to eat, make sure that you prepare them as simply as possible, try not to add too many spices or oil to them. A good way of preparing vegetables for such diets is to steam them, thus you are retaining many of the vital nutrients that you require to assist your body during the detoxification period.

By following such simple rules you will find that your body is more effectively able to absorb the nutrients that it requires and will assist with the effective removal of the toxins that it has absorbed during the festive season. Also you may also find that your body has more vitality and stamina and there may well be an improvement in your digestive system as well. Finally, you may also find that you are more focused and able to deal more effectively with the stresses and strains of every day life.
